Hamsadhwani celebrated their 17th Anniversary on 17th August 2006 at Narada Gana Sabha, Chennai. The Distinguished Citizen of the year award was conferred on Dr. S S Badrinath, Chairman, Sankara Nethralaya by C.V. Karthik Narayanan, Chairman & Managing Director, UCAL products and Trustee, Music Academy, Chennnai. The award was given to Dr. Badrinath in recognition of his "unparalleled and sustained social and community care service.
Dr. S. S. Badrinath, Chairman has been selected for the "International Council Of Ophthalmology (ICO) Golden Apple Award for the Best Clinical Teacher in Ophthalmology in the APAO (Asia - Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology) Region 2006" award.
Ms. R. Selvi, Junior Research Fellow, Biochemistry Research Department received the C. Rajagoplan Endowment Award for best paper presentation in the University Grants commission (UGC) sponsored National Workshop / National conference on Recent Trends in Biochemistry and Biotechnology, with Special Reference to Natural Products in Health. The workshop was organized by the Annamalai University, Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (Department of Science & Technology (DST) - Fund for Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure in Universities and other Higher Education Institutions (FIST) & Univeristy Grants Commission (UGC) - SAP Sponsored Department) on February 24, 2006 to February 26, 2006 in association with Society of Biological Chemists (India), Annamalainagar Chapter & Biochemistry Society.
Ms. Selvi presented a paper on "Effect of amino acid mixture on the Chinese Hamster Ovarian (CHO-K1) Cell morphology, viability and glycation". The study investigated the importance of amino acids mixture apart from free amino acids on the cell morphology in phase contrast microscope, viability by Trypan blue, labeled studies by Liquid scintillation, assay on glucose metabolism and studies on cell metabolic activity.
The study concluded that glucose uptake was seen to increase with increase in glucose conc. in the cell environment and the viability was found to decrease with increase in glucose concentration. The amino acid showed protective effect that was dose dependent and the dependent on the type of the amino acid even after the cells were exposed to the effects of high glucose concentration.
Dr. N. Angayarkanni, Lecturer, Biochemistry Research Department was invited to give a lecture in the same Workshp. She also chaired a session. Dr. Angayarkanni spoke on Hyperhomocystenemia in ocular diseases. The objective of her study was to see if hyperhomocystenemia was associated with ocular diseases with retinal inflammation and vascular events and if oxidative stress is related to increase in homocysteine. The incidence of mild hyperhomocystenemia was found to be 67.56% in Uveitis, 55% in Eales Disease, 51.5% in Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO) and 75 % in Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) in the study subjects.
Our Chairman Dr. S. S. Badrinath, was awarded the "Nayana Shri" award by His Holiness Shri. Vishvesha Teertha Swamiji on the occasion of 25th Tatvajnana Sammelana & Shri. Vishvesha Teertha Swamiji's Amrutha Mahotsava on 6th February 2006. The award was bestowed on him for his yeoman service towards Ophthalmology in India.
Our Chairman, Dr. S. S. Badrinath was honored by Sree Morbi Mitra Mandal on 24th January 2006. The felicitation ceremony took place at Sankara Nethralaya, 18, College Road, Chennai. Initiated by Mr. C.B. Shah, donor and well-wisher of Sankara Nethralaya, the Sree Morbi Mitra Monday felicitated Dr. Badrinath for his yeomen service in the field of Opthalmology.
Receiving the felicitation, Dr. Badrinath, said in his inimitable way, that the felicitation was for Sankara Nethralaya and all its employees for the work everyone has done together to make Sankara Nethralaya a foremost institution in India. The Tenth Bhagawan Mahaveer Awards for Excellence in Human Endeavour 2004 was presented to Dr. S.S. Badrinath, Chairman, Sankara Nethralaya by Governor T.N. Chaturvedi at Bangalore on 11th January 2006. The Mahaveer Awards are given annually for excellence in human endeavour in the fields of non-violence and vegetarianism, education and medicine, community and social service.
Governor T.N. Chaturvedi presented the awards to the President and Chairman of Sankara Nethralaya Chennai, Dr. S.S. Badrinath, Dr. Sharadkumar Dicksheet of Pune, and Rajmal S. Jain of Rajasthan. They were honoured for their contribution in the field of education, medicine and community and social services.
The Governor said the awardees were role models who could mould the future generations and inspire them. " Humanism still exists and these contributors can show us the path, " the Governor added.

The Tamil Nadu Governor Mr. Surjit Singh Barnala felicitated Dr. S.S. Badrinath - Chairman, Sankara Nethralaya, for his exemplary service rendered over the past twenty-seven years in the area of eye care at the Annual Conference of Representatives of the District and Local Centres of St. John Ambulance of Tamil Nadu on 24th December 2005. The Governor praised Dr. Badrinath for his untiring efforts in the field of medicine and declared that Chennai was brought to limelight through Sankara Nethralaya. The function was graced by Mr. N. Dr. S.S. Badrinath - Chairman Sankara Nethralaya, has been conferred with the Silver Jubilee Hall of Fame Award by the Scientific Committee of Maharashtra Ophthalmological Society at the Focus 2005 Conference coinciding with its the silver jubilee celebrations at Mumbai. The honour has been conferred by all the three societies viz. Maharashtra Opthalmological Society, Vidarbha Ophthalmological Society and the Bombay Ophthalmological Society on the 6th of November 2005.
The Sankara Nethralaya OM Trust in the United States is selected as grant-in-aid recipient for the year 2005 by The Hindu Community & Cultural Centre (HCCC), Livermore, California.
The grant will be used to provide free services to indigent patients by Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, India.
