Art Exhibit Supports Eye Care In India

A group exhibition of 160 works of art by 112 artists from across India in support of the community eye care work at Sankara Nethralaya runs October 15 - 30, 2004 at the Lalit Kala Akademi, Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi. Curated by Sushma Bahl, the exhibit is presented by Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai.

Rajah Serfoji II

Here is a discovery that has to be made known to the ophthalmic community worldwide. Dr.S.S. Badrinath, Dr. J. Biswas and Dr. Vasanthi Badrinath report on Rajah Serfoji II, a royal prince and surgeon of Thanjavur who deserves a place in the world community of physicians.

Palkhivala Foundation Lecture

The Sixth Memorial Lecture was arranged by the Nani Palkhivala Foundation on "The Diabetes Epidemic – Why and what can we do?" at Music Academy Hall. Read on the news on this event as reported in The Hindu on October 11, 2004.

Pushing Pixels

Mr. Prakash Subramaniam, Technical Development Manager, FUJIFILM Australia visited Sankara Nethralaya. He presented a talk on the effective use of digital cameras. He covered the history of photography and digital electronics and the convergence of technology. There was an interactive session, where the multimedia team, the medical photography team and medical consultants had their doubts clarified. The questions covered exposure, timing, red eye defects in photographs, types of cameras and their application.

SN On The Road

Sankara Nethralaya's consultant in Nigeria, Dr. S. Rajesh reported on October 1, 2004 that out of over 457 out-patients who were examined in 9 days at the Kebbi Eye Care Program, 108 patients underwent cataract surgery.

All surgeries were successful. Majority of these patients are with bilateral mature cataracts and POAG. Significant number of patients are one eyed as the other eye has undergone couching, which is very prevalent in this part of the world.

ESO Visitors

On October 5, Mr. Aditya Goyal (an alumnus of Sankara Nethralaya's Elite School of Optometry) brought ten students from Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Institute to the Elite School of Optometry.

On The Cover

India Today, the Tamil edition recently extensively covered initiatives of Sankara Nethralaya in its cover story, "Medical Centers of Excellence in India and High Tech Reach in the Healthcare sector." The article highlighted the history of Sankara Nethralaya, research in Genetics, Tele-Ophthalmology community reach-out programs, and the ongoing Electronic Medical Records initiatives.

Uttaranchal Center

Dr. S.S. Badrinath and the Senior Management team visited Dehra Doon, in Uttaranchal, to meet and discuss with Chief Minister Sri N.D. Tiwari the possibilities of setting up an ophthalmic center in Uttaranchal. They also attended the First Annual Conference and opening ceremony of the Uttaranchal State Ophthalmologic Society. Dr S.S. Badrinath gave the guest lecture on Diabetic Retinopathy.

Art For Vision

India Today a leading news magazine, had an article on the Art for Vision, the art show that is being held at Lalit Kala Academy, Delhi between October 15 and 30, 2004. This initiative is a platform to help sustain the Medical Research Foundation Corpus Fund, the interest from which will be utilized for providing high quality in-patient free eye care surgery to the poor in India.

Dr. Brian Anderson, New Zealand

Dr. Brian Anderson, Associate Professor and Anesthesiologist and Intensivist, Starship Hospital, New Zealand visited our hospital facility. He visited the Anaesthesia, the Paediatric Ophthalmology department, and the Genetics department and was very impressed. He was surprised that we adapt modern techniques of the West to the Indian scenario. He seems to have also mentioned his delightful experience to almost everyone he met during his brief stay in Chennai.

He was here to deliver the fifth Millenium Oration on "Pitfalls in Sedation and Analgesia in the PICU," at the National Paediatric Intensive Care Conference Organized by The Child’s Trust Hospital. In fact, he made a special mention of his visit to Sankara Nethralaya to that august gathering. As an editorial board member of the Journal Paediatric Anaesthesia he encouraged us to publish our research findings.
