Welcome to OMLOG, the weekly web digest of Sankara Nethralaya, in Chennai, India. While we hope you are receiving EYELIGHTS, our quarterly newsletter, this web site will in no way attempt to replace the fine work of Dr. M. Bhaskaran and Dr. Navin Jayakumar.
Instead, what we hope to do here is to give you a quick(er) snapshot of the patients who arrive from different parts of the country and the various events that take place at our hospital. We will also use this space to let you know of the new initiatives that Sankara Nethralaya is embarking on in the weeks and months ahead.
As you may know, we recently celebrated our 25th anniversary. President Abdul Kalam's commemorative address at that gathering in October 2003 called for a national mission to achieve "defect-free" vision for all. Sankara Nethralaya stands firm in its commitment to eradicate preventable blindness in India. Indeed, what distinguishes our hospital is our promise to deliver affordable and often totally free eye care to all in India. Since our inception we have provided free pre and post-operative care for hundreds of thousands of people. By last year's numbers, almost 43% of those visiting the hospital were treated free of charge! In real numbers that's almost 146,000 people!
